Slow Spinnin’

Now miles away from the city, Sammus looks around for somewhere to hide until the morning. She quietly slips into the forest that lines the side of the road, walking past a sign that reads, “Beware the fog.” Her lack of armor immediately makes itself apparent as she swats bugs and tries to avoid snagging her spandex on wayward branches. She notices a small foggy clearing up ahead as well as a pond. Suddenly her throat begins burning and she erupts into a hysterical coughing fit. Clutching her gun, she covers her mouth and nose with her arm as she races forward through the noxious gas. She starts to grow dizzy and her breath becomes strained and short. Her world begins to morph in front of her as well. The trunks of trees contort into ghastly looking faces, their branches turning into spindly appendages and the sky becomes tinged with an orange hue. A large hairy beast rushes out from behind a tree towards her, howling and snarling wildly. She fires at the beast with deadly accuracy, sentencing it to the ground after one shot. As she approaches the body, she covers her mouth in horror. Lying in front of her is no longer a beast but one of her students. “Why…?” He asks, his eyes closing. As she looks across the pond she spots another sign that reads: “Beware the fog. Risk of hallucinations.” She stares at her student on the ground for a moment and then runs past the clearing, shaking and fighting tears.
